A While back I wrote a small post how to Share a single Keyboard and Mouse
across multiple PC’s with different OS and while checking some of my older
post’s I thought it would be a good idea to give you some heads up about it.
I am certain that many computer enthusiasm like myself face the very same
issue. I for one like a clean workstation specially when having 5-6 Screens
around you that take most of the space.
Synergy is a remarkable open-source product and considering its a software solution the biggest reason to choose it is the fact its totally free.
I have installed Synergy on the following 4 OS having around my workstation
- Master – Windows 7
- Slave – OS X
- Slave – Ubuntu
- Slave – OS X
and I got it to work just fine. However been a geek means also I need to blow of some steam once in a while and of course I do that playing some games. Now here are some of the limitations I faced
with the tool. Running a Game or Movie on one OS the Mouse did not work any longer and I became all sort of issues. After a week struggling I decided to abandoned Synergy for now and go for a
Hardware solution instead.
The actual reason for this Post, is my decision to purchase a ATEN KVN Switch C1784A instead and I can say this little device is the one I would miss the most. It is a perfect solution for
my needs. I don’t even use it to its full capacity but it does exactly what I wanted.
- I have 1 Keyboard attached directly to the KVM
- I have 1 USB Mouse attached directly to the KVM
- I also attached 1 Set of Speakers to the KVM
- I attached 1 USB cable from the KVM to each PC (for Mouse + Keyboard)
- also attached 1 Sound Cable from the KVM to each PC
- all Monitors I got directly set into the PC’s
So as you can see I only use it for Keyboard, Mouse and the Sound. I adjusted it to switch Channels by clicking the 3rd wheel of my Mouse twice and it works like a charm. I can set a Movie on one PC
only switch my Keyboard and Mouse over to another and watch the Movie on the other PC while the sound is coming out of my Logitech Speakers.
This is a fantastic product and not even that expensive. So check it out if you are looking for a similar solution.
