Emergency and Disaster Information Services on the Go

Submitted by on March 15, 2011 – 11:23 amOne Comment | 1 views

The devastating events currently happening in Japan are the number one talked about, many Country Leaders talk about the Security of their own Nuclear Power Plants. Germany is considering to switch off a few of there long runner (from 1974) and Switzerland even blocks plans for a new Power Plant.

When I was watching the news about the horrible event in Japan I was asking myself how much information are available prior to the event. How sophisticated is our existing technology to predict such an upcoming catastrophe and warn the Population effected by it? Japan has one of the most advanced Warning Systems in the World and still the Information where only broadcast ed about 1 Minute before the 1st Earthquake. How much time did pass before the Tsunami hit the shores? Was that even enough time to evacuate the hot areas?

According to Statistics 72.6% of the World’s population have Mobile Phones, so I wonder how many Mobile Applications are out there covering Emergency Event Distributions of some sort to actually alert People on the go?
Surely only a smaller percentage of these are Smart phones but still even Text Messages could be already a good enough warning for someone to move to a save area. From what I gather only (payed Mobile Services) actually distributed these info’s to Mobile Subscribers in Japan. Should that not be available for everyone and for free? Kinda do makes you wonder what does your own Country would do in such an Event.

While searching for Emergency and Disaster Information I found one pretty good site (National Association of Radio Distress-Signalling and Infocommunications) in Hungary. The sites Developer states the following:

“The Hungarian National Association of Radio Distress-Signalling and Infocommunications (RSOE) operates Emergency and Disaster Information Service (EDIS) within the frame of its own website which has the objective to monitor and document all the events on the Earth which may cause disaster or emergency. Our service is using the speed and the data spectrum of the internet to gather information. We are monitoring and processing several foreign organisation’s data to get quick and certified information.”

Real Time Emergency and Disaster Information

Anyone got some other sides which got similar information levels ? What are your thoughts about pre-warning-systems and communication levels via Mobile devices?
